ALGIERS- The dispute surrounding the “political” jerseys intended to be worn by RS Berkane during their CAF Cup semi-final match against USM Alger continues to stir controversy and provoke reactions, with condemnations from Algeria and false narratives emerging in Morocco. However, examining the legal aspects of the situation sheds light on the matter.
The regulations set forth by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), particularly Articles 6 and 7, offer clear guidance that discredits the actions of the Moroccan team without ambiguity.
Article 6 explicitly permits advertising on players’ equipment before group matches, provided it adheres to the laws of the host country and complies with CAF equipment regulations. However, the jerseys proposed by the Moroccan team clearly violate Algerian legislation.
Additionally, Article 7 of CAF’s regulations mandates that the visiting team must travel with two sets of jerseys—one with advertising and one without. Yet, it has come to light that the Moroccan team failed to bring the second set of jerseys without advertising, constituting a breach of CAF regulations. This oversight underscores, if any doubt remained, the intentions behind Morocco’s actions.
