Algiers, Algeria | September 17th, 2024 Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who officially assumed the office of President of the Republic after being sworn in during a ceremony at the Palace of the Nations in Algiers, was re-elected for a second term in the presidential election held on September 7, 2024, securing 84.30% of the votes.

Born on November 17, 1945, in Mecheria, Naâma province, Tebboune’s early life was shaped by his family’s strong nationalist beliefs. His father’s involvement with the Association of Algerian Muslim Ulama and their anti-colonial sentiments led them to settle in Sidi Bel Abbès, where young Abdelmadjid began his education. He joined the Imam’s free school in 1953, passing the intermediate-level exam in 1957, and went on to study at the regional high school and Benzerdjeb High School, where he earned his baccalaureate in 1965.

Tebboune later graduated from the National School of Administration in 1969, specializing in economics and finance, as part of the second class, which was named in honor of the revolutionary martyr, Larbi Ben M’hidi.

His professional career began in Béchar, then known as Saoura, where he served as an administrator and eventually as Secretary General of the province of Djelfa in 1974. His administrative career saw him holding several key roles across different provinces, including Adrar, Batna, and M’sila, where he was promoted from Secretary General to Wali (Governor). Over the years, he led the provinces of Adrar, Tiaret, and Tizi Ouzou as Wali.

In 1991, Tebboune entered the national political arena as Minister Delegate for Local Authorities. In 1999, he was appointed Minister of Communication and Culture, and in 2001, he took on the role of Minister of Housing and Urban Planning, a sector he would lead again in 2012. His expertise in housing policy earned him a reputation for effective governance.

In 2017, Tebboune briefly served as Minister of Trade before being appointed Prime Minister on May 24 of the same year. His first bid for the presidency came during the election on December 12, 2019, which he won, marking the beginning of his journey as Algeria’s President of the Republic.

Throughout his long career, Abdelmadjid Tebboune has been a key figure in both the regional administration and national government, guiding policies related to urban development, communication, and economic reforms. His leadership has been defined by a focus on modernizing Algeria while preserving its national sovereignty and traditions.
