Algiers, Algeria | October 15th, 2024 — On October 15, 2024, a landmark event in maritime sustainability unfolded with the inaugural Algerian Blue Economy Conference (ABEC) at Dar Errais in Algiers. This pioneering initiative, organized by Leancubator in collaboration with the Callmeblue MED project, attracted over 200 influential stakeholders from Algeria and nine Mediterranean nations, including Tunisia, Mauritania, Italy, Greece, and Spain.

The blue economy presents a transformative opportunity for Algeria, boasting a 1,200 km coastline and a vibrant maritime heritage. Despite this potential, the sector remains significantly underutilized. Maritime activities—ranging from fishing and aquaculture to tourism and maritime transport—are vital for local communities, with an estimated 7 million Algerians relying directly or indirectly on the sea for their livelihoods, according to intersectoral data from 2019. The conference sought to address the urgent need for innovation and sustainable practices, aiming to harness these opportunities for economic development while promoting responsible marine resource management.

ABEC served as a dynamic platform for dialogue among national and international experts, policymakers, industry leaders, and innovators. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions on transforming Algeria’s maritime sector into a long-term growth engine, emphasizing the delicate balance between economic advancement and sustainable resource stewardship. Key topics of discussion included marine biodiversity, research and innovation, tourism, fisheries and aquaculture, maritime technologies, and infrastructure development.

By highlighting the integration of new technologies and sustainable practices, the conference made a significant contribution to enhancing Algeria’s strategic vision for its maritime sector. It reaffirmed the country’s commitment to fostering regional cooperation, positioning Algeria as a vital hub for innovation and sustainability within the Mediterranean.

Moreover, the conference underscored the crucial role of startups and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in propelling growth in the blue economy. Discussions emphasized the importance of entrepreneurship, innovation, and the creation of maritime clusters and cross-sector partnerships to fully exploit the sector’s potential.

Leancubator, recognized as a leading innovation cluster in Algeria, has showcased its commitment to sustainable development through this groundbreaking event. The conference concluded with the signing of strategic partnerships with the Tunisian Maritime Cluster and Greece’s Maritime Center of Excellence, further solidifying Leancubator’s dedication to supporting the growth and development of stakeholders in the maritime economy.

As Algeria embarks on this pivotal journey, the Algerian Blue Economy Conference stands as a testament to the nation’s ambition to sustainably leverage its maritime resources, fostering economic growth while safeguarding its rich marine heritage.
