ALGIERS- In a proactive move towards strengthening bilateral agricultural cooperation, the Italian agricultural company Bonifiche Ferraresi (BF) expressed its readiness to implement substantial agricultural investments in southern Algeria. The company, during a working meeting with the Algerian Agency for Investment Promotion (AAPI) on Monday, outlined plans to focus on wheat production and seeds.
Federico Vecchione, the CEO of the Italian company, shared insights after the meeting at the AAPI headquarters in Algiers. He mentioned that BF secured a definitive concession contract last year in the Touggourt province for durum wheat production, emphasizing that it marks “a first step in a broader and more significant project.”
Vecchione stated to the press, “We are here to work on expanding the project through other agricultural investments in southern Algeria.” He highlighted the company’s intention to launch a more extensive investment in Algeria in the coming year, indicating a commitment beyond durum wheat production. The company aims to diversify its activities by investing in seed production, olives, fruits, and food industries, contributing to Algeria’s food security and exploring export opportunities.
In this context, Vecchione confirmed the company’s ambition to export wheat from Algeria to Italy, a country recognized as one of the world’s largest consumers of durum wheat but does not produce enough domestically.
The BF delegation, including former Italian Prime Minister Massimo D’Alema, viewed the company’s project as “among the most important in terms of Algerian-Italian cooperation, constituting a strategic and mutually beneficial initiative.” D’Alema emphasized that BF’s investments would significantly contribute to achieving food self-sufficiency in Algeria and open up substantial opportunities for the pasta production sector in Italy.
D’Alema revealed that BF is in the process of establishing a specialized agricultural university in Italy and expressed the company’s interest in creating a research and training center in Algeria. This initiative aims to enhance agricultural production by transferring advanced production technologies to Algeria.
