ALGIERS- Algeria is gearing up for the upcoming national tuna fishing campaign scheduled to commence at the end of next May, with the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Ahmed Badani, expressing determination to surpass last year’s achievements. As part of the preparations, a significant move has been made towards promoting high seas fishing, with a focus on augmenting production and exploring new fishing grounds.
The allocation of resources for this endeavor includes the dedication of 109 vessels, each exceeding 24 meters in length, to high seas fishing operations for the current year. Notably, 34 of these vessels are designated for tuna fishing. Algeria’s quota for tuna fishing has been increased to 2,046 tons for the year, as stipulated by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). This year’s quota sees an additional 23 tons allocated as compensation for the shortfall in 2023.
In a new development, Algeria’s fishing plan includes the registration of an Algerian tuna fattening farm with the ICCAT registry for the first time. This milestone paves the way for Algeria to commence fattening operations starting from the upcoming fishing season, as per a recent statement from the ministry.
Furthermore, in a bid to bolster high seas fishing activities, construction is underway for 11 vessels exceeding 35 meters in length—a first in Algeria. Minister Badani highlighted the significance of one of these vessels, measuring 42 meters in length with a maximum payload of 423 tons, as the largest domestically produced fishing vessel nationwide. This vessel, currently under construction at the shipbuilding and repair workshop in El Marsa, northwest of Chlef, is a collaborative effort between Algerian companies Nautica.it.DZ and CMR Naval of Bousmaïl (Tipaza), with technical oversight provided by an Italian partner.
Additionally, efforts are underway to import larger vessels exceeding 40 meters in length, with provisions for dedicated docking spaces to ensure optimal working conditions. Minister Badani also announced the finalization of the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) program for fishermen who have accumulated years of experience without formal certification. This initiative aims to facilitate their integration into the fishing sector by providing them with appropriate training opportunities.
During his sectoral visit, Minister Badani, accompanied by Minister of Transport Mohamed El Habib Zahana, inspected various coastal areas, including the port of Dellys. Discussions centered on enhancing port infrastructure and the establishment of a training school to benefit fishermen from multiple provinces.
The inspection tour extended to Zemmouri, where the ministers assessed port facilities and reviewed plans for urban and suburban transport development. This comprehensive review underscores Algeria’s commitment to modernizing its fishing industry and fostering sustainable growth in the maritime sector.
