ALGIERS-  The recently inaugurated Tindouf free zone near the Mauritanian border signals the beginning of a new era of commercial exchanges with neighboring countries in West Africa. According to Samir Derradji, Director of Bilateral Trade Relations at the Ministry of Trade, there is strong political will to implement this free zone, evident in the directives from the highest authorities of the state. “We are determined to accelerate the operationalization of this zone,” he stated during a radio interview.

Derradji emphasized the strategic significance of the Tindouf free zone due to its geographic location, foreseeing its potential to stimulate economic activity in the region. He also underscored the importance of expediting the establishment of the five recently announced free zones, including Taleb-Larbi in El Oued, Timiaouine in Bordj Badji Mokhtar, Tin Zaouatin in In Guezzam, and Debdeb in Illizi. These zones, he noted, are instrumental in Algeria’s integration into the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and Sahel countries.

While current trade with Mauritania remains below 5%, Derradji expressed optimism about the transformative potential of the Tindouf free zone, describing it as a pilot project for diversification and economic revitalization.

Progress toward operationalizing the free zones includes the finalization of decrees after the promulgation of laws governing these zones. The ministry is focused on making the Tindouf zone operational in the shortest possible time.

In addition to free zones, Algeria is investing in infrastructure projects like the Trans-Saharan Highway, which will facilitate trade with West Africa. Despite challenges, such as disparities in economic development among African nations, Algeria’s participation in regional initiatives like the AfCFTA holds promise for increased trade.

Beyond free zones, Algeria is leveraging existing mechanisms like bilateral cooperation commissions and business councils with Mauritania. Plans for a preferential trade agreement with Mauritania are underway to further enhance economic ties.

To expedite trade with Africa, Algeria is investing in logistical improvements, including acquiring cargo planes and optimizing maritime routes. These investments, once implemented, are expected to double or even triple trade with African countries this year, according to Derradji.
