ALGIERS- Up to fifty fishing boats are built annually in the province of Boumerdes by six (6) shipbuilding and repair yards to cover national needs in terms of fishing and pleasure boats, and for export, said, Sunday, the local management of fishing and aquaculture (DPA).
“These sites, which have been operational for several years, are active in particular at the ports of Dellys, Zemmouri, Cap Djinet and the Khemis El Khechna business area,” the sector director Kadri Cherif told APS.
“The revival of shipbuilding and repair activity aims to set up a fishing fleet to raise national fisheries production capacities and, therefore, ensure food security,” he added.
Currently employing more than 250 graduates of vocational training in permanent positions, these shipyards ensure the construction of different types of boats and crafts in wood and polystyrene, with a length ranging from 4.80 to 35 meters, specified the same official.
Mr. Kadri cited among the achievements of these sites, “three offshore fishing tuna boats with 35 meters long, recently launched, while two other similar boats are under construction and a third awaiting launch of its construction at the port of Zemmouri El Bahri, with an integration rate estimated at 65%,” he further explained.
The construction site of Sarl Naval Construction and Repair (CORENAV) is among the “most active in the field at the national level. It has recently been visited by foreign industrial operators, who have shown great interest in its products,” noted the same manager.
Created in 1982, this company occupies a base of 4,000 M2 at the port of Zemmouri. It employs 90 young vocational training graduates in permanent positions, its manager, Chaouche Ali, told APS.
