ALGIERS- The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced the commencement of an investigation into the incidents that unfolded after the match between the Moroccan and DR Congolese national football teams. This match, part of the group stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, witnessed heated confrontations involving players and coaching staff from both teams.

The captain of the DR Congo team, Chancel Mbemba, and Morocco’s coach, Walid Regragui, were involved in intense altercations, which nearly escalated further with the intervention of players from both sides.

In a statement released, CAF declared, “The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has initiated an investigation against the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) and the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFA) following the post-match incidents in the Africa Cup of Nations, Ivory Coast 2023, match between Morocco and the Democratic Republic of Congo.”

The statement further mentioned, “CAF will refrain from making any additional comments on this matter until the investigation is completed.”

This move comes after a strongly-worded statement from the Congolese Football Federation, leveling serious accusations against Morocco’s coach Walid Regragui and some players. The DR Congo team accused the Moroccan side of racial insults and even physical violence against their captain, Mbemba, in the locker room corridors.

Strict measures are expected to be taken against those involved in the brawl, with images and videos circulating globally immediately after the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
