Calls for Accelerating the Handling of Corruption Cases in Morocco

ALGIERS- In a recent statement, the Moroccan Association for the Protection of Public Funds expressed concerns regarding the methodology employed by the Attorney General at the Court of Appeal in Marrakech in addressing cases of financial corruption. The association characterized the approach as slow, hesitant, and contributing to a waste of judicial time.
The association called for a trial against those involved in embezzlement of public funds, demanding the recovery of misappropriated funds and a crackdown on money laundering. In an effort to highlight these concerns, the association announced plans for a protest scheduled for the upcoming Saturday, January 13, 2024, in Marrakech. Simultaneously, a press conference is set to be organized on Thursday, January 11, 2024, to discuss the issue of corruption.
Acknowledging positive developments in some judicial pursuits against officials suspected of involvement in corruption, the association emphasized the need for increased efforts to combat this phenomenon. However, it deemed these pursuits insufficient unless they encompassed all individuals responsible for financial misconduct based on the principle of linking accountability with liability.
The association urged the expedited handling of pending cases and the necessary decisions to be made, aligning with the aspirations and expectations of Moroccans in the fight against corruption, bribery, embezzlement of public funds, and money laundering.
Furthermore, the association called for the issuance of deterrent judgments proportional to the severity of financial corruption crimes, advocating for the confiscation of assets belonging to the accused in these cases. Additionally, it emphasized the need for swift resolution of corruption cases brought before the Court of Cassation that have experienced prolonged delays.
This call to action follows a thorough examination by the regional office of the association in Marrakech of the “developments in financial corruption cases in the region and the outcomes of several cases presented to the jurisdiction of the financial crimes department at the Court of Appeal in the same city.”
