Algiers, Algeria | June 23rd, 2024 — According to FIFA’s preferences, the upcoming edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) in 2025 will indeed be held in winter. Despite Morocco advocating for a summer 2025 tournament, FIFA, under the leadership of Gianni Infantino, has had the final say in this matter.
During a video conference of the CAF executive committee on Friday at 14:00 GMT, several topics were discussed by representatives from African countries, notably the date of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The continental rendezvous will take place in winter, with a twist: this edition will not commence in January as previous ones did, but will start from late December and extend until mid-January. Specifically, the tournament will run from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. The CAF is expected to officially confirm this date later in the evening.
Original Yet Problematic Date
This schedule, although unique, could pose challenges for certain players due to their club commitments. Players will be required to join their national teams early in December for preparations. Consequently, several players based in Europe and elsewhere may miss their clubs’ final matches before the winter break, as well as key fixtures in European competitions. Adjustments may need to be considered leading up to the tournament.
It is noteworthy that the FIFA Club World Cup is scheduled for summer 2025, which prevented Morocco from hosting the CAN during that period, despite the Royal Moroccan Football Federation’s (FRMF) President, Fouzi Lekjaa, advocating for it. Additionally, Moroccan infrastructures were not yet fully prepared to host the event under optimal conditions.
