Algiers, Algeria | September 1st, 2024 — As the presidential election on September 7 approaches, candidates and their representatives have increasingly stressed the importance of maintaining national stability and reinforcing unity, urging a robust voter turnout to ensure these goals are met.
Youcef Aouchiche, the candidate from the Front of Socialist Forces (FFS), speaking from Tizi-Ouzou, emphasized the need to “preserve national unity and strengthen its bonds.” He pledged that, if elected, he would “work to enshrine the core principles of national identity.” Highlighting that his presidential platform is designed to fulfill the aspirations of Algerians, Aouchiche described his proposals as “a democratic alternative for building an Algeria that aligns with the principles of the November 1, 1954 Declaration and the resolutions of the 1956 Soummam Congress.” He underscored that realizing this alternative requires the mobilization of every citizen in the upcoming election on September 7.
Aouchiche, who outlined the key aspects of his electoral program, focused on political reforms, including the separation of powers, justice system reform, and economic sector reform. He committed to “establishing an economic model based on decentralization to ensure equal development opportunities and diversify investment resources.” He reiterated his call for strong voter participation, emphasizing the critical role of this election in shaping the nation’s future.
Brahim Merad, campaign director for independent candidate Abdelmadjid Tebboune, echoed this sentiment during grassroots activities in Biskra and a rally in Tébessa. He urged voters to renew their trust in Tebboune, arguing that doing so would enable him to “continue the comprehensive development efforts, particularly in the economic and social sectors.” Merad pointed out that Tebboune’s program includes substantial support for healthcare and housing, improving citizens’ living conditions, and converting several towns into wilayas—a project initially targeting southern and highland regions. Additionally, Tebboune has pledged to create 450,000 jobs, continue wage increases, and implement major infrastructure projects. Merad called on citizens to vote for Tebboune to “ensure the continuation of building the new Algeria.”
In Tizi-Ouzou and Bouira, Abdelaali Hassani Cherif, the candidate from the Society for Peace Movement (MSP), affirmed that his electoral platform is focused on strengthening national unity and preserving the country’s stability. He stressed that the MSP remains committed to these goals, in line with the vision of its late founder, Mahfoud Nahnah. Cherif highlighted the historical, cultural, tourist, and religious significance of Tizi-Ouzou, a region that played a key role in resisting the brutal French occupation and produced great revolutionary leaders while preserving Algeria’s identity and religious values through its zaouïas.
Detailing his electoral program, Cherif emphasized economic reforms based on resource exploitation, equal opportunities, reducing disparities, and promoting investment. He promised that, if elected, he would “remove bureaucratic barriers for investors and encourage young people to establish micro-enterprises.” On the social front, Cherif committed to establishing the foundations of social justice through salary revisions and safeguarding citizens’ purchasing power.
These campaign messages reflect a broad consensus among the candidates on the critical importance of national unity and stability, with each calling on voters to play an active role in the upcoming election to secure Algeria’s future.
