ALGIERS- Algeria’s diplomatic efforts to secure a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for the 2024-2025 period have been gaining momentum since the arrival of Foreign Affairs Minister Ahmed Attaf in New York. With the backing of the African Union, the League of Arab States, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Algeria is now seeking to broaden its support base ahead of the election slated for June 6th at the UN General Assembly.
To this end, Attaf has been holding meetings with diplomatic representatives from various countries, including a recent meeting with the members of the permanent mission of Algeria to the UN, led by Ambassador Amar Bendjama. During the meeting, Attaf urged the mission members to intensify their efforts to secure the support of as many UN member countries as possible for Algeria’s candidacy.
Algeria’s candidacy is based on its rich history of diplomatic achievements and its commitment to enhancing the effectiveness of the Security Council in preserving international peace and security. Attaf emphasized the need for dedication and honesty to achieve this goal, and for Algeria’s voice to be heard as a valuable contributor to the international community’s efforts to address current challenges.
As the election draws near, Algeria remains focused on meeting all necessary conditions to ensure the success of its mandate. With Attaf’s leadership and the support of its allies, Algeria is poised to make a significant contribution to the work of the Security Council.
Algeria’s candidacy for Security Council: Natural extension of its pivotal role
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, hosted, last Wednesday, a reception to promote and mobilize support for Algeria’s candidacy for membership of the Security Council for the period 2024-2025. In his speech, Attaf reaffirmed the objectives and priorities of Algeria through its candidacy.
The audience, consisting of ambassadors and representatives of United Nations Member States, was impressed by Attaf’s emphasis on Algeria’s role in its regional environment with Arab, African, and Mediterranean dimensions, as well as its international presence.
Attaf highlighted the importance that Algeria places on the vital role of the United Nations, the serious and ferocious challenges facing this international body, the shortcomings that afflict its performance, and the special relationship between Algeria and this organization. He stressed Algeria’s commitment to assume its share of the burden of achieving the objectives enshrined in the United Nations Charter and to contribute resolutely to global efforts aimed at ensuring a better future for all of humanity.
Furthermore, Attaf recalled the role of Algerian diplomacy in promoting peace and stability in its regional environment, in close coordination with the United Nations and the regional organizations concerned, particularly the African Union and the League of Arab States.
In light of Algeria’s extensive efforts towards promoting peace, stability, and prosperity, the head of Algerian diplomacy has emphasized the country’s natural candidacy for membership in the Security Council. Algeria’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation and building a world order that prioritizes these values is reflected in its chosen slogan and priorities for its candidacy.
The Algerian vision for its role in the Security Council is centered around promoting peaceful resolutions to crises, strengthening partnerships, supporting regional organizations, empowering women and young people in the pursuit of peace, and bolstering the international fight against terrorism.
These priorities are a testament to Algeria’s dedication to creating a safer and more prosperous world for all. The country’s efforts in areas such as Palestinian reconciliation, the Middle East peace process, and mediation in Mali demonstrate its commitment to promoting stability and security in the region.
In addition, Algeria’s implementation of numerous development projects in neighboring African countries and efforts to combat terrorism and transnational organized crime highlight its commitment to promoting prosperity and safety beyond its borders.
Algeria’s candidacy for membership in the Security Council is a natural extension of its role as a leader in promoting peace and stability. Its efforts towards building a better world order are commendable and demonstrate its commitment to international cooperation and collaboration.
