Cape Verde’s President Reaffirms Algeria’s Principled Stances During Meeting with Special Envoy Saihi

Algiers, Algeria | January 17th, 2025 — Cape Verde’s President José Maria Neves reaffirmed his nation’s deep appreciation for Algeria’s unwavering and principled foreign policy positions during a formal meeting with Algeria’s Minister of Health, Abdelhak Saihi, on Thursday, January 16. Saihi, serving as a special envoy of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, delivered a written message from the Algerian head of state, conveying warm fraternal greetings and underscoring Algeria’s commitment to deepening the strategic partnership between the two nations.

The meeting, held in Praia as part of Saihi’s official visit, offered both parties the opportunity to discuss mechanisms for strengthening bilateral cooperation across multiple fields of mutual interest. According to a statement from the Algerian Ministry of Health, Saihi emphasized the importance of activating frameworks for enhanced collaboration, particularly in sectors pivotal to development and public welfare.

President Neves expressed profound gratitude for Algeria’s historical support, particularly recalling the pivotal role Algeria played in facilitating Cape Verde’s independence. He highlighted the symbolic significance of Algeria’s involvement in drafting Cape Verde’s independence document, signed in Algiers on August 25, 1974.

Neves further praised the timing of the diplomatic visit, which coincides with Cape Verde’s upcoming 50th anniversary of independence on July 5, 2025. He reiterated his nation’s respect and admiration for Algeria’s consistent support for liberation movements and its principled stances on global justice, reaffirming his desire to deepen bilateral ties.

Concluding the meeting, President Neves conveyed his highest regards to President Tebboune, emphasizing Cape Verde’s aspiration to strengthen its historical bonds with Algeria and expand cooperation in key sectors, ensuring mutual benefit and reinforcing shared values of sovereignty, peace, and solidarity.
