ALGIERS- The regional office of the Democratic Confederation of Labour (CDT) stated that “the rise in prices has reached unbearable levels,” posing a threat to the majority of Moroccans and workers in their basic livelihoods, particularly in terms of food and agricultural supplies.

In an official statement, the union emphasized the need to approve a general salary increase, as promised in the agreement of April 30, 2022, between the government of the Makhzen and the most representative trade unions.

Addressing the local situation in the city of Mohammedia, the union rejected the approach of closing major businesses in the city (Ikoma, Strafour, Bizkeli, Samir, etc.) and relocating thousands of workers and their families to satisfy real estate and concrete forest lobbies.

The Confederation renewed its call to resume production at the Moroccan Refining Company (formerly Samir), save the Koutoubia Group from collapse, assist all struggling businesses, and preserve the gains of these companies for the national economy and local development.

The union urged the authorities of the Makhzen to protect the right to union affiliation, reduce harassment against unionists in companies, and emphasized the need to respect labor rights and fundamental workers’ rights, stating that “serious and responsible dialogue and negotiation are necessary.” The only way to qualify the level of collective labor relations to increase productivity and yields and strengthen the requirements of social peace.
