ALGIERS- The resolution presented by the USA at the United Nations Security Council regarding a ceasefire in Gaza was rejected by the main proponents of a genuine ceasefire, namely Algeria, Russia, and China.
The latter two vetoed the American resolution, denouncing it as “hypocritical” for not directly calling for a cessation of hostilities.
Algeria’s representative at the Security Council, Ammar Bendjama, explained that the American draft resolution implicitly allows for the continued targeting of Palestinian civilians and provides no guarantee to stop the escalation.
He also added that the proposed resolution “fell short of our expectations and did not address the main issues concerning Gaza.”
The American draft resolution garnered 11 votes in favor, three votes against (Russia, China, and Algeria), and one abstention (Guyana).
