ALGIERS- In a significant move for the Algerian automotive market, Chinese automaker Chery is poised to make a substantial investment of $110 million in a production plant. Aiming to solidify its presence, this ambitious project was unveiled by Aïmene Cheriet, the CEO of Auto Leader Company (ALC), Chery’s local partner, signaling a notable milestone in Sino-Algerian collaboration.

Aïmene Cheriet shared this development with Asharq Business, shedding light on the details of the agreement between Auto Leader Company and Chery Automobiles Co. Ltd. According to the pact, the production facility will be established in Bordj Bou Arreridj, in the eastern part of Algeria.

The plant is set to commence operations by producing 24,000 vehicles in its first year, with rapid expansion plans to reach 50,000 vehicles the following year and an impressive total of 100,000 vehicles annually thereafter. This ambitious strategy aims to cater to the local market’s demands while considering export opportunities to neighboring countries.

The announcement of Chery’s plant establishment in Algeria was officially made in early November during an audience with the Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Ali Aoun. The Chery delegation, led by Steve Chan, the General Manager of the brand in Africa, and Aïmene Cheriet, ALC’s CEO, had the opportunity to share project details and objectives.

Successful Launch in the Algerian Market

Chery made its debut in the Algerian market on November 9 through its representative, Auto Leader Company. The initial steps of the Chinese brand in Algerian soil involved the importation and commercialization of several car models, signaling a promising start to this Sino-Algerian collaboration.

According to Cheriet, Chery’s importation aims to reach 10,000 cars in 2023, with ambitious projections of 40,000 to 60,000 cars by 2024. This final year of importation will mark the beginning of local production, symbolizing a major turning point in the Algerian automotive market dynamics.

Chery’s massive investment in Algeria promises to invigorate the automotive sector and strengthen economic ties between China and Algeria. With ambitious production goals and a well-defined strategy to meet market demands, the alliance between Chery and Auto Leader Company emerges as a crucial step in the evolution of Algeria’s automotive landscape. Algerian consumers can anticipate a diversified offering of quality vehicles, heralding the start of a new era in the country’s automotive industry.
