“China Seeks to Elevate Strategic Partnership with Algeria,” Affirms Ambassador Li Jian

Algiers, Algeria | September 30th, 2024 — China has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing its strategic partnership with Algeria, with ambitions to elevate bilateral cooperation to unprecedented levels. During a reception held at the Palace of Culture ‘Moufdi Zakaria’ in Algiers, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Li Jian, the Chinese Ambassador to Algeria, highlighted Beijing’s strong desire to deepen ties with Algiers and further fortify their longstanding partnership. This event underscored the historic bond between the two nations and China’s recognition of Algeria’s evolving role on the global stage.

A Renewed Commitment to Strategic Cooperation

Speaking before an audience of dignitaries, diplomats, and key stakeholders, Ambassador Li Jian articulated China’s vision for the future of Algerian-Chinese relations. He emphasized that the bilateral partnership, already marked by decades of solidarity and collaboration, is poised to reach new heights. “The relationship between our two nations is deeply rooted in a shared history of struggle, mutual respect, and common aspirations for peace and prosperity,” Li Jian stated. He further remarked, “Our goal is not merely to maintain the status quo, but to elevate this relationship into a new era of strategic cooperation that benefits both our peoples.”

Li Jian also expressed admiration for the ambitious reforms undertaken by Algeria since 2019 under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. These reforms, which have focused on improving administrative efficiency, fostering economic diversification, and enhancing the investment climate, have not gone unnoticed by the international community. The Chinese ambassador praised Algeria’s progressive economic measures, which have positioned the country as a vital partner in China’s global Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Algeria’s Domestic and International Gains Acknowledged

The ambassador was particularly complimentary of Algeria’s recent domestic achievements, recognizing the country’s efforts to modernize its economy and reinforce its diplomatic presence on the world stage. “The progress Algeria has made, both nationally and internationally, has been widely acknowledged, not only by China but by the global community. We commend Algeria’s determination to move forward, embracing change while maintaining its rich cultural heritage and values,” he noted.

Li Jian highlighted Algeria’s pivotal role in North Africa and the wider Arab world, praising the country’s reinvigorated diplomacy and increasing influence in regional and international matters. He also acknowledged Algeria’s success in diversifying its economy, which has historically been reliant on hydrocarbons. These reforms, according to Li Jian, have fostered an environment conducive to stronger bilateral investment and collaboration.

Expanding Cooperation in Critical Sectors

Li Jian stressed the importance of building upon the already strong foundation of cooperation between the two nations, particularly in key sectors such as digital transformation, modern agriculture, and industrialization. “The future of the Algerian-Chinese partnership lies in our ability to innovate and adapt to the changing global landscape. Digitalization, technological advancements, and modern industrial practices will be at the forefront of our collaborative efforts,” Li Jian remarked.

He called for the swift implementation of the agreements reached between the leadership of both countries, urging the acceleration of joint ventures and projects that would contribute to Algeria’s economic diversification. As part of China’s larger vision, Algeria is seen as a critical partner in the Belt and Road Initiative, with the potential to serve as a gateway for Chinese investments across Africa and the Mediterranean.

The ambassador further mentioned China’s commitment to enhancing cooperation in modern agriculture, an area where both countries have significant mutual interests. With Algeria striving to reduce its reliance on imports and strengthen food security, China’s advanced agricultural technologies could provide the tools necessary for modernizing the sector. “By working together, we can revolutionize agricultural practices in Algeria, ensuring that the country’s agricultural sector becomes more resilient and self-sustaining,” Li Jian stated.

Amid the backdrop of geopolitical shifts and growing global uncertainties, Li Jian stressed the importance of strong, stable partnerships in navigating these challenges. He lauded Algeria’s assertive diplomacy, which has been particularly visible in its principled positions on key issues, such as Palestine, Western Sahara, and its role in African and Arab diplomacy. He underscored China’s unwavering support for Algeria’s sovereign decisions and its consistent backing in international forums, noting that the friendship between the two nations is grounded in mutual respect for each other’s independence and sovereignty.

“The world is facing unprecedented challenges, from economic downturns to global security threats. In this context, it is vital for nations like China and Algeria to stand together, reinforcing our diplomatic ties and working towards a more stable and peaceful global order,” the ambassador asserted.
