Algiers, March 29, 2024 – Algeria has officially launched the first phase of its national program for 15 GW of solar energy, with the ceremony for the El-Meghaier power plant. This initial stage of 3 GW aims to establish 19 solar power plants across 17 provinces, with a total investment of 241 billion Algerian dinars, equivalent to $1.78 billion. Of this, 172 billion dinars ($1.2 billion) are allocated to the 2,000 MW program and 69 billion dinars ($500 million) to the 1,000 MW program. The question arises: what is the market share of each company tasked with implementing the program?

According to recent data, Chinese companies have seen their share rise by securing contracts worth 148 billion dinars, or $1.1 billion, for the construction of 10 photovoltaic solar power plants under this program, divided into two phases. The first phase involves the construction of 1,000 MW, followed by 2,000 MW for the second phase. Specifically, in the 2,000 MW program, Chinese companies have clinched a contract worth 119.5 billion dinars, equivalent to $900 million, for the construction of 9 photovoltaic solar power plants ranging from 80 to 220 MW each. They will be solely responsible for implementing 1,210 MW, which must be delivered in full within 16 months, accounting for more than half of the program.

In terms of contracts awarded to Algerian companies, the national public works company (Cosider), in partnership with Italian firm Fimer, secured two contracts worth 26.2 billion dinars for the construction of two 120 MW and 150 MW photovoltaic solar power plants, respectively. Following closely is Hamdi Eurl, which won a contract worth 16 billion dinars for two projects with a production capacity of 80 MW each. Zergoune company, in partnership with Turkish firm Ozgun, secured a contract worth 9.6 billion dinars for the construction of an 80 MW solar power plant.

For the 1,000 MW solar program, the project is valued at 68 billion dinars, or over 500 million euros, for the construction of 5 photovoltaic solar power plants. Here again, Chinese companies secured the largest contract for a 300 MW solar power plant, worth over 28 billion dinars, equivalent to $200 million, with a delivery date expected in 22 months.

In second place is a Turkish company, which secured a contract worth 24.5 billion dinars for the construction of a 300 MW photovoltaic solar power plant, followed by Cosider in partnership with Italian Fimer, which obtained a contract worth 20.5 billion dinars for a 250 MW power plant installation. Finally, Amimer Energie Group was awarded two contracts worth nearly 15 billion dinars for the construction of two power plants with capacities of 50 MW and 100 MW, respectively.
