Algiers, Algeria | January 1st, 2024 — In a comprehensive annual report unveiled on Wednesday, the General Directorate of Civil Protection presented an impressive account of its operations in 2024. The figures, both staggering and sobering, underscore the unwavering commitment of Algeria’s Civil Protection teams to safeguarding lives and property across the nation. With a total of 1,146,283 interventions recorded, the report paints a vivid picture of the immense challenges faced and the extraordinary efforts undertaken.

One of the most pressing areas of concern remained road traffic accidents, with 64,261 incidents documented throughout the year. These collisions resulted in 76,800 injuries and a heartbreaking toll of 1,959 fatalities. The Civil Protection units acted swiftly to mitigate the impact, often operating under high-stress and high-risk conditions to save lives and minimize further harm.

Equally alarming were incidents related to gas accidents, a persistent hazard in residential and industrial settings. The report highlighted 964 gas-related incidents, which led to 2,402 injuries and 119 tragic deaths. Civil Protection teams emphasized the critical need for public awareness and adherence to safety protocols to prevent such avoidable tragedies.

The report also shed light on the dangers faced in Algeria’s waterways and recreational areas, where 77,481 drowning incidents were recorded. Remarkably, rescuers managed to save 56,572 lives, a testament to their skill and dedication. However, 357 individuals lost their lives, underscoring the ongoing need for enhanced public education on water safety.

In the realm of health emergencies, Civil Protection played a pivotal role in providing life-saving assistance. A staggering 711,826 cases required medical evacuations, with patients transported promptly to hospitals for urgent care. This vital service highlights the indispensable role of Civil Protection in Algeria’s broader healthcare infrastructure.

The scourge of fires remained a significant challenge, with 4,667 wildfires and 29,407 urban fires reported. These incidents not only caused devastating damage to Algeria’s natural and urban landscapes but also tested the resilience and expertise of firefighters, who worked tirelessly to contain and extinguish blazes.

Beyond these specific categories, Civil Protection teams responded to 171,119 miscellaneous accidents, addressing a diverse range of emergencies, from workplace incidents to natural disasters. Additionally, 86,558 preventive interventions were carried out, reflecting the organization’s proactive approach to reducing risks and promoting public safety.

The General Directorate of Civil Protection reiterated its call for increased public vigilance and adherence to preventive measures. “The year 2024 was a stark reminder of the dangers we face as a society. The numbers are not just statistics; they represent lives impacted, lives saved, and, tragically, lives lost. Our mission is to reduce these risks and ensure a safer Algeria for all,” the report concluded.
