ALGIERS- During the inauguration of the Saidal Group’s Center for Bioequivalence, Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production Ali Aoun addressed the pressing issue of illicit drug imports, commonly known as the “cabas.” Aoun firmly declared that the practice of importing drugs through the “cabas” has been eradicated in Algeria. He issued a stern warning, stating, “Anyone caught with drugs from the cabas, their fate is known.”
Minister Aoun has consistently emphasized his commitment to combatting the importation of drugs via the “cabas.” His unequivocal statement regarding the fate of those involved in this trade reflects a firm stance against a practice that was widespread in Algeria for an extended period.
The Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production inaugurated Algeria’s first Center for Bioequivalence, named Equival Biocenter, within the Saidal Group. This center is tasked with conducting studies to demonstrate the effectiveness and safety of generic drugs. Equival Biocenter will offer its expertise to national and international laboratories seeking studies on the equivalence of generic drugs to reference drugs in terms of efficacy and safety.
Defending the Efficacy of Generic Drugs
Authorities responsible for pharmaceutical product registration, as well as service providers in the field of clinical trials, can utilize the services of Saidal’s Center for Bioequivalence. The center is also open to research institutions for biomedical research projects and medical practitioners engaging in clinical research. Minister Aoun defended the efficacy of generic drugs, addressing unwarranted criticism as “manufactured critiques” from individuals lacking scientific logic.
For its launch, Equival Biocenter leverages the expertise of four Indian experts with over 900 bioequivalence studies to their credit. The establishment of this center required an investment of DZD 267 million (excluding infrastructure) by the Saidal Group. The center already has a database of 500 healthy volunteers ready to participate in clinical trials. Minister Aoun expressed satisfaction, stating, “This new center will strengthen the control of pharmaceutical products in Algeria to ensure the quality of locally manufactured or imported drugs.”
