ALGIERS- The environment represents the third pillar of Olympism, a crucial aspect emphasized during the World Congress on Sport and Environment in Rio (1999). The IOC urged all its constituents to commit to sustainable development. Since then, the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ACNOA) has integrated environmental sustainability into its priorities, embarking on a strategy for sustainability.
To this end, over 300 participants, including high-ranking officials from the highest Olympic body such as Robin Mitchell, Vice-President of the IOC, African members of the International Olympic Committee, the representative for environmental matters at the IOC, Presidents of African National Olympic Committees, representatives from the 54 African National Olympic Committees, presidents of environmental commissions of African National Olympic Committees, academics, and specialists, convened for two days in Algiers to address various issues concerning environmental preservation and the fight against climate change.
“This African Forum, organized by ACNOA under the presidency of Algerian Mustapha BERRAF, took place on March 5th and 6th, 2024, at the Holiday Inn Hotel and covered several themes discussed by prominent international researchers, academics, and experts,” reads a statement from the Association. The Forum, of high caliber, was placed under the patronage of Prime Minister Mohamed Ennadir Larbaoui and was organized in collaboration with the IOC, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Ministry of Environment and Renewable Energies.
Dr. Thomas BACH, President of the IOC, delivered a video address, highlighting the IOC’s interest in environmental issues and the fight against climate change, commending ACNOA’s efforts across all domains.
Participants expressed their determination to devise an operational plan and concrete program to further develop the African Olympic movement’s actions and commitment to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The goal is to ensure that all individuals and the African continent live in a healthy and clean world.
The Ministry of Environment, alongside the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and local authorities spared no effort to ensure the unprecedented success of this continental gathering.
