Jijel, March 24, 2024 – The project to construct the container terminal at the Djen Djen Port in Jijel is expected to be completed before the end of 2025, with its commissioning scheduled for the same period. This announcement was made on Sunday by the CEO of the port infrastructure, Mr. Abdeslam Bouab.
“The completion of construction works for the terminal, which were resumed in 2024 after being suspended in 2019 due to certain issues with the South Korean partner, will transform the Djen Djen Port into a significant hub for goods exchange in the Mediterranean basin by providing quay berths capable of accommodating large vessels,” stated the same official to APS.
Reducing Costs and Transit Times to Europe and Africa
Mr. Bouab assured that a 320-meter long quay with a depth of 14 meters will be received by June as part of the initial phase, capable of accommodating vessels carrying 6,000 containers. This will be followed by the completion of the 2nd and 3rd phases by September 2025, increasing the depth to 17 meters, allowing the port to berth ships carrying up to 18,000 containers.
“The reception of giant container ships at the Djen Djen Port will reduce transport costs and cut transit times by approximately 20 days for goods coming from Europe and destined for African countries. The port of Djen Djen aims to increase the volume of goods exchanged to 12 million tonnes, up from 9.7 million tonnes in 2023,” he added.
The development of the container terminal at Djen Djen Port represents a significant milestone in Algeria’s efforts to enhance its maritime infrastructure and boost trade connectivity with Europe and Africa. Once operational, it is expected to catalyze economic growth in the region while positioning the port as a key player in the Mediterranean trade landscape.
