Algiers, Algeria | December 10th, 2024 — The Algerian National Agency for the Study and Monitoring of Railway Investment Projects (ANESRIF) has successfully completed the studies for the realization of 1,048 kilometers of the crucial Algiers-Tamanrasset railway line, a strategic project that has garnered the government’s full attention and priority. This significant step, outlined by Abdelkader Mazar, ANESRIF’s communications officer, represents a key milestone in the ambitious expansion of Algeria’s national railway network.
The completed studies cover several critical sections of the railway line, which will link Algeria’s northern capital to the southernmost region of Tamanrasset. Specifically, the studies focus on four major segments: the 153 km stretch connecting Chiffa to Boughezoul, the 265 km route from Laghouat to Ghardaïa, the 230 km stretch from Ghardaïa to El Menia, and the 400 km stretch linking El Menia to In Salah. Each of these segments is a vital component in the broader plan to connect the north and south of the country and enhance regional connectivity.
While studies for the initial phases are complete, the study for the section connecting In Salah to Tamanrasset, which spans 650 km, is still underway. Moreover, planning is already in progress for the 400 km stretch that will extend from Tamanrasset to In Guezzam, near the border with Niger, which is set to play a crucial role in enhancing Algeria’s regional links.
This railway project is part of Algeria’s broader infrastructure development plan, which includes the recently inaugurated 250 km stretch connecting Boughezoul (Médéa), Djelfa, and Laghouat. This section, opened by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in October 2023, is designed to accommodate high-speed trains, reaching speeds of up to 220 km/h. It marks an important milestone in Algeria’s efforts to modernize its transport infrastructure and enhance connectivity across the country.
During a recent Council of Ministers meeting, President Tebboune emphasized the critical importance of fast-tracking the implementation of Algeria’s modernization plan. He specifically called for prioritizing the construction and interconnection of railway lines, particularly the Alger-Tamanrasset route, which is envisioned as a cornerstone of Algeria’s national railway system and its integration into broader African and regional transport networks. This will help to meet the high economic demand for efficient, high-capacity transport infrastructure.
The ANESRIF’s efforts are in direct alignment with President Tebboune’s directives to accelerate the development of the railway network, with a special focus on regions in Algeria’s extreme south, as well as on cross-border connections with neighboring African countries. This includes the trans-Saharan railway that will eventually connect Algeria’s capital to the borders with Niger.
The Algiers-Tamanrasset railway project holds particular significance in the country’s portfolio of strategic infrastructure projects. It spans an impressive 2,406 kilometers, covering vital areas such as Blida, Médéa, Djelfa, Laghouat, Ghardaïa, El Menia, In Salah, Tamanrasset, and reaching the borders with Niger. As the project progresses, it promises to be a transformative force in the country’s development, facilitating the movement of goods and people across vast distances, stimulating regional economic growth, and enhancing Algeria’s position as a key player in the trans-Saharan transport network.
