Algiers, Algeria | July 9th, 2024 — In a recent proclamation on Tuesday, the Algerian Ministry of the Interior announced the nationwide implementation of biometric driver’s licenses, signifying a pivotal advancement in the nation’s pursuit of improved identification accuracy and more efficient administrative procedures.
The Ministry’s statement indicated that this initiative began on Friday, July 5, 2024. The rollout of biometric driver’s licenses initially started at the wilaya level in 2019, later expanding to the dairas in December 2023. This new directive mandates that all local administrative offices (APCs) across the country issue these technologically advanced licenses, applicable to both new applicants and those renewing their licenses.
The updated regulations standardize the process for issuing biometric driver’s licenses across all APCs, ensuring consistency and adherence to current legislative standards. Beyond the primary issuance, the new measure also allows for the addition of various vehicle categories to existing licenses, thus accommodating a wider spectrum of vehicular qualifications.
Despite the shift to biometric licenses, the Ministry assures that existing traditional driver’s licenses will remain valid until their respective expiration dates, thereby preventing any immediate inconvenience for current holders.
To date, the Ministry of the Interior has issued a total of 4,545,000 biometric driver’s licenses. This extensive deployment highlights the government’s dedication to utilizing advanced technology to enhance the security and efficiency of identification documents nationwide.
