ALGIERS- Algeria and Japan concluded the fifth session of their political consultations, demonstrating a convergence of views on various international issues. The meeting, held in Algiers, was co-chaired by Mr. Naceur Boucherit, the Director General of “Asia-Oceania” at the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Nagaoka Kansuke, the Director General of “Middle East and Africa” at the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This bilateral meeting, held in accordance with a memorandum of understanding signed in 2010 between the two nations, emphasized the significance of the historical relations between Algeria and Japan and expressed the mutual desire to strengthen them further.
The discussions encompassed a range of crucial matters, with a particular focus on bilateral cooperation between the two countries. Both parties acknowledged the longstanding ties between Algeria and Japan and expressed their commitment to elevate these relations to their full potential. The meeting also delved into international and regional political issues of shared concern.
The reform of the United Nations was one of the key topics on the agenda. Algeria and Japan demonstrated a shared commitment to the values and principles of the United Nations, emphasizing the importance of respect for international law and the peaceful resolution of disputes. This alignment signifies the two nations’ dedication to fostering a world order based on justice, equality, and cooperation.
Another prominent subject of discussion was the situation in Palestine. Algeria and Japan expressed their concerns over the ongoing challenges faced by the Palestinian people and advocated for a just and lasting resolution. By aligning their positions, both countries demonstrated their commitment to supporting the rights of the Palestinian people and ensuring a peaceful and stable future for the region.
The issue of Western Sahara, a longstanding dispute, was also addressed during the consultations. Algeria and Japan underscored the significance of finding a fair and mutually acceptable solution that respects the self-determination of the Sahrawi people. By acknowledging their shared concerns over this matter, the two countries reinforced their commitment to international law and the principles of territorial integrity and self-determination.
Additionally, the situation in Libya and the Sahel region featured prominently in the discussions. Algeria and Japan expressed their shared commitment to stability, security, and development in these areas. Recognizing the challenges faced by Libya and the Sahel, the two nations emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts and international cooperation to address the complex issues in these regions effectively.
