Convergence of Views Between Algiers, New Delhi

Algiers, Algeria | October 16th, 2024 — The recent state visit of India’s President to Algeria wrapped up on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in diplomatic relations. Beyond establishing fruitful partnerships, this visit highlighted the alignment between Algiers and New Delhi on various international issues.

Algeria and India have historically stood united against colonialism, establishing diplomatic relations in July 1962, shortly after Algeria’s independence. Both nations have been key players in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), advocating for a more just and equitable global order. Tebboune also highlighted India’s commitment to the Algerian Revolution, which included the establishment of an office for the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic (GPRA) in New Delhi. This collaboration was crucial for internationalizing Algeria’s liberation struggle against French colonial propaganda. With such historical foundations, both leaders expressed a desire to restore their previous levels of coordination and consultation, recognizing their active roles within the NAM.

Shared Principles and Regional Stability

The President reaffirmed that Algeria and India are committed to working together on various regional and international issues, underpinned by shared values and principles. Their diplomatic actions reflect this common ground, fostering agreement on numerous contemporary regional and global topics. This commitment includes ongoing efforts to promote international peace and security.

In discussions regarding the Middle East, Tebboune and the Indian President Droupadi Murmu engaged in a comprehensive dialogue about the current regional context, particularly concerning the ongoing aggression in Gaza and Southern Lebanon. They acknowledged the humanitarian crises and the severe consequences for security and peace in the Middle East. A significant outcome of their discussions was a mutual agreement to intensify coordination and reaffirm the Palestinian people’s right to establish an independent state.

On the matter of Western Sahara, the President indicated a shared understanding with his Indian counterpart to adhere to the United Nations Security Council’s resolutions regarding this issue. Moreover, both nations expressed a commitment to supporting peace, security, and development in the Sahel region, aiming to help these nations navigate periods of crisis and insecurity.

President Tebboune emphasized the convergence of views on all discussed topics, reiterating their collective aim to foster security and stability in various crisis-stricken regions worldwide. He also noted that the state visit of the Indian President paves the way for a new era in economic cooperation, serving as an opportunity to highlight the political and security alignment between Algeria and India amidst various conflict zones.
