Algiers, Algeria | July 17th, 2024 — The Commissariat for Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency (CEREFE) and the National Sanitation Office (ONA) formalized, on Wednesday in Algiers, a framework cooperation agreement aimed at optimizing energy consumption in wastewater treatment. The agreement, signed by Messaoud Khelif, Secretary General of CEREFE, and Mohssen Gharib Dia, Director General of ONA, underscores their joint commitment to integrating renewable energy solutions into hydraulic sanitation systems.
Objectives and Vision
The primary objective of this partnership is to enhance energy efficiency in wastewater treatment processes through the adoption of renewable energy technologies. According to CEREFE, this collaboration presents substantial opportunities for advancing the Hydraulics sector, particularly in implementing energy optimization strategies and transitioning towards sustainable practices.
Key Areas of Collaboration
- Energy Optimization in Wastewater Treatment: CEREFE and ONA will collaborate closely to reduce energy consumption in wastewater treatment facilities. This includes the deployment of renewable energy technologies to improve operational efficiency.
- Technico-Economic and Environmental Studies: Comprehensive studies will be conducted to explore opportunities for recovering and valorizing sludge from treatment plants, examining its potential as an alternative fuel source.
- Methanization of Sludge: Regulatory and commercial aspects related to the methanization of sludge will be addressed. This includes storage, transport, distribution, risk management, safety protocols, and potential applications of biomethane in transportation, heating, and electricity generation.
- Carbon Footprint Studies: Joint assessments will be carried out to evaluate the carbon footprint associated with wastewater management, establishing carbon balances within relevant infrastructures.
- Educational and Promotional Activities: The agreement encompasses organizing joint training sessions, seminars, study days, and workshops focused on sustainable development, energy management, renewable energies, and energy efficiency.
