Corruption: A heavy sentence requested against former minister Baraki

ALGIERS-   The Public Prosecutor at the Economic and Financial Penal Pole at the Tribunal of Sidi M’hamed, Algiers, has requested a 12-year prison sentence against the former Minister of Water Resources, Arezki Baraki, in his capacity as former director of the national agency for dams and transfers.

Sentences ranging from 4 to 6 years in prison were also requested against the members of his family, and other sentences ranging from 3 to 7 years in prison were requested for the rest of the defendants prosecuted in the same case.

The defendants were charged, among other things, with having granted unjustified and undue privileges to others during the conclusion of contracts and transactions in violation of the legislative and regulatory provisions and laws in force, corruption in public contracts, abuse of power, influence peddling, and conflicts of interest. They were also charged with money laundering and illicit enrichment.
