Algiers, Algeria | August 5th, 2024 — The Algiers Court announced that 68 individuals have been placed under provisional detention, while three others are under judicial supervision in connection with a bribery scandal involving the sale of endorsements for presidential candidates, according to Algerian radio reports.

The scandal emerged during a preliminary investigation into the sale of electoral endorsements by certain elected officials to prospective candidates for the upcoming presidential election. Of the 77 individuals interrogated by the investigating judge, only six were granted release following a thorough preliminary investigation conducted by the court.

The accused face serious charges, including corruption, abuse of power, influence peddling, and misuse of office. The investigation uncovered that three presidential aspirants were involved in this scandal, where over 50 elected officials admitted to accepting bribes ranging from 20,000 to 30,000 dinars for endorsing the candidates. Additionally, ten intermediaries were identified as having collected and transferred these funds to the elected officials.
