Court Validates Presidential Candidates for September 7 Election: Aouchiche, Tebboune, and Hassani Chérif Approved

Algiers, Algeria | August 1st, 2024 — On Wednesday, the Constitutional Court officially confirmed the list of candidates for Algeria’s presidential election scheduled for September 7. President Omar Belhadj announced that the court has validated the candidacies of Youcef Aouchiche from the Socialist Forces Front (FFS), Abdelmadjid Tebboune running as an independent, and Abdelaali Hassani Chérif from the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP).

The court conducted closed-door sessions from July 27 to July 30 to review appeals submitted by five disqualified candidates. The final decision was reached on July 31. According to Belhadj, while four appeals were accepted in form, they were rejected on substantive grounds due to insufficient merit. One appeal was dismissed for being filed beyond the legal deadline.

This ruling upholds the National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE)’s previous decision made on July 27, which had confirmed that only three out of the initial sixteen candidates met the necessary endorsement criteria. Belhadj noted that the disqualified candidates often had incomplete documentation, including blank forms, which led to their exclusion from the race.

With the final list now confirmed, the approved candidates are poised to commence their campaigns. They have until August 15 to begin presenting their platforms and engaging with the electorate. The Constitutional Court’s decisions will be published in the Official Gazette, and the rejected candidates have been duly informed.

Political analysts and economists regard this election as a critical juncture for Algeria’s future. The three approved candidates are expected to offer varied approaches to addressing the nation’s pressing challenges. The forthcoming campaign period will be essential as candidates work to articulate their visions and garner support from voters.
