Algiers, Algeria | June 13th, 2024 — The Algerian Economic Renewal Council (CREA) has actively engaged in global discussions on reforming the social contract, particularly following the 112th International Labour Conference in Geneva. In a statement, the CREA expressed its firm commitment to this initiative, initiated by the Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Gilbert F. Houngbo, aimed at restructuring the social contract in response to contemporary challenges.

Acknowledging Current Realities

The CREA acknowledged the existing international and regional frameworks that aim to uphold universal rights, including human rights, labor rights, the right to development, minimum livelihood, right to water, and right to life. However, amidst these frameworks, the CREA pointed out the stark realities revealed by ongoing global conflicts, such as the situation in Palestine, which highlight that power often dictates what is considered right.

Addressing Workers’ and Employers’ Needs

In response to these challenges, the CREA advocated for a reassessment of the social contract originally conceived by international organizations and the ILO founders. They emphasized the need for this reassessment to consider the diverse situations and needs of businesses and the aspirations of employees. The envisioned social contract should promote freedoms such as choice, progress, participation, and responsibility, catering to the various stages of life and ensuring that all voices are heard.

Moving Forward with Inclusivity and Responsiveness

The CREA stressed the importance of inclusivity and responsiveness in adapting the social contract to contemporary realities. They emphasized the necessity for the social contract to evolve in sync with the changing dynamics of global labor markets and economic landscapes.

Supporting Progressive Reforms

Furthermore, the CREA reiterated its commitment to supporting progressive reforms that promote social justice, economic stability, and mutual respect within the framework of international cooperation. This stance reflects their dedication to advancing the interests of both employers and workers while ensuring that the social contract remains relevant and effective in the face of ongoing global challenges.

Overall, the CREA’s engagement in the global discourse on the social contract underscores Algeria’s commitment to contributing to international efforts aimed at enhancing labor rights, economic stability, and social cohesion on a global scale.
