Algiers, Algeria | June 13th, 2024 — The Algerian Economic Renewal Council (CREA) took part in a global discussion on a new social contract during the 112th International Labour Conference, held in Geneva. This initiative, spearheaded by ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo, aims to rethink the social contract in light of contemporary challenges.

In a statement, CREA emphasized the importance of international and regional instruments designed to uphold universal rights, including human rights, labor rights, the right to development, the right to basic necessities, access to water, and the right to life. The organization highlighted the stark realities revealed by global upheavals and ongoing conflicts, particularly referencing the dire situation in Palestine.

CREA argues that the current social contract, as envisioned by the founders of international organizations and the ILO, needs to be rethought to better address the lived experiences of people worldwide. This includes workers and employers who face diverse challenges depending on their geographical location.

The organization calls for collaboration among employers, workers, and governments to promote transparency, social justice, and economic development beyond reliance on hydrocarbons.

Collective Effort for Economic Sovereignty

According to CREA, economic progress depends on the collective will and commitment of both men and women. In Algeria, employers and workers are learning to work together to strengthen the country’s economic sovereignty. CREA emphasizes that a forward-thinking approach, rather than one rooted in outdated notions of employer-employee opposition, is essential for progress.

The new social contract should cater to the diverse needs of businesses and the varied aspirations of employees. This includes allowing for choice, mobility, progress, and having a voice in matters that affect their lives. The goal is to achieve new freedoms and responsibilities, reflecting a more equitable and just society.

CREA concludes that standards should not serve as a shield for false universality or an imaginary humanity that hides self-serving interests. The focus should be on creating a genuine and just framework that addresses real-world challenges and aspirations.

This engagement at the ILO conference highlights CREA’s dedication to contributing to the global discourse on social justice and economic development, aligning with broader international efforts to create a fairer and more sustainable world.
