ALGIERS- Victims of the Al Haouz earthquake in Morocco, are still living in tents as winter sets in, facing extreme conditions after authorities abandoned them. The government failed to fulfill promises of relocating them to proper housing before the harsh winter weather, leaving over 300 people dead due to the severe cold and lack of food.

Sources report that the situation in the earthquake-affected regions in Morocco is dire, with complete absence of local and central authorities. More than 300 individuals have lost their lives due to extreme cold and hunger. The victims, currently residing in tents, were initially meant to be temporary shelters, but their situation now resembles that of refugees fleeing war, deprived of the essentials of life.

As the cold intensifies and hunger spreads in the affected areas due to the complete absence of local and central authorities, over 300 people have lost their lives. The Moroccan government’s policy of indifference, neglect, and abandonment of its responsibilities toward earthquake victims continues, putting their lives at imminent risk.

Amid the onset of winter and with several months of harsh weather ahead, thousands of survivors find themselves almost homeless, deprived of food and heating in freezing temperatures that are unbearable. The victims are not the only ones suffering; all Moroccans are grappling with an economic crisis, compounded by a collapse in purchasing power, soaring prices of essential goods, and a lack of job opportunities.

Over 500,000 people have lost their jobs, with thousands in the public and private sectors facing the same fate. In this social instability, the Moroccan government, under King Mohammed VI’s rule, has faced criticism for corruption and poor governance. The country is witnessing widespread protests, with inflation hitting record levels and social unrest escalating.

Morocco is grappling with the specter of rampant protests against the Makhzen regime. Inflation is hitting the country hard, and the government is under fire from unions, parliamentary opposition, and local media. The ongoing aggressions on Gaza and the accompanying protests supporting the Palestinian cause and opposing normalization as a distraction have forced the postponement of social demands until a ceasefire is declared in Gaza and the Zionist ambassador is expelled from Rabat.
