Cuban Ambassador Armando Vergara Bueno Affirms Solidarity with Sahrawi People in Farewell Meeting with Sahrawi President Ghali

ALGIERS- The Sahrawi President and Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali, received, Saturday, the Ambassador of Cuba to Algeria and the Sahrawi Republic, Mr. Armando Vergara Bueno, at the end of his tenure.
During the meeting, President Brahim Ghali praised the efforts of Ambassador Armando Vergara Bueno in enhancing the bilateral relations between Cuba and the Sahrawi Republic, expressing his best wishes for success in his future endeavors.
The meeting was attended by Mr. Ma’alenin Attikani, in charge of the Sahrawi Presidency of the Republic, and Mr. Mohamed Salem Hamda, the Director-General responsible for Latin America Affairs at the Sahrawi Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Mr. Armando Vergara Bueno expressed his gratitude for the warm reception from President Brahim Ghali, affirming his commitment to return to his country as a bearer of a just cause awaiting decolonization.
The Cuban Ambassador emphasized the deep historical ties between the governments and peoples of the two brotherly nations, stating that he would remain steadfast in defending the rights of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence.
“I had the honor of attending the farewell meeting held with His Excellency Mr. Brahim Ghali, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front and President of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, where we reiterated Cuba’s solidarity, both as a party and government, with the just cause of the brotherly Sahrawi people,” tweeted His Excellency.
Cuba’s support for the struggle of the Sahrawi people for self-determination has been longstanding, dating back to 1976. Over the years, Cuba has made significant contributions to the development of the Sahrawi people, particularly in the fields of education and healthcare.
– Education Support: More than 3,000 Sahrawi students have had the opportunity to pursue higher education in Cuban institutions under the Ministry of Public Health and the Ministry of Higher Education. This educational support has played a crucial role in empowering Sahrawi youth and building human capital for the future.
– Current Educational Initiatives: In the academic year 2023-2024, over 60 young Sahrawis are enrolled in Cuban educational centers, furthering their academic pursuits and strengthening cultural ties between the two nations.
– Healthcare Assistance: Cuba has also deployed a medical brigade and a brigade of basic education teachers to work in the Tindouf camps, providing essential healthcare services and educational support to the Sahrawi population. This demonstrates Cuba’s commitment to solidarity and humanitarian assistance, particularly in challenging circumstances.
