ALGIERS- As Algeria commemorates the 61st anniversary of its hard-fought independence, esteemed diplomats from Cuba who served with dedication in Algeria during the 1960s and 1970s, Giraldo Mazola, and Óscar Oramas, paid tribute to the Algerian Revolution by attending the constitution of the Association of Friends of the Algerian Revolution. This historic event highlighted the enduring bond between the two nations, forged through shared struggles and the pursuit of freedom.

The presence of Ambassador Giraldo Mazola and Ambassador Óscar Oramas, both of whom served in Algeria underscored the importance Cuba places on its relationship with Algeria. Their participation in the constitution of the Association of Friends of the Algerian Revolution demonstrated their commitment to preserving the legacy of the Algerian people’s fight for self-determination.

The Association of Friends of the Algerian Revolution is dedicated to fortifying the deep-rooted historical and cultural connections between Algeria and its cherished allies, with Cuba being at the forefront of this alliance. Its primary objective is to foster solidarity among nations that have endured comparable struggles, recognizing the significance of shared experiences. Through the establishment of this association, the invaluable historical legacy of both nations will be preserved and commemorated, ensuring that future generations can continue to draw inspiration from their remarkable journeys.

Moreover, Cuba’s Ambassador to Algeria, Armando Vergara Bueno, joined heads of diplomatic missions in attending a vibrant popular parade in the Wilaya of Algiers. This parade served as a spirited tribute to the Algerian people and their unwavering determination to secure their independence. It also served as a testament to the strong bonds of friendship and cooperation between Algeria and the international community.

Ambassador Armando Vergara Bueno’s active involvement in the parade exemplifies Cuba’s deep admiration for the Algerian people’s resilience and their enduring struggle for freedom. The parade showcased the rich cultural heritage of Algeria, with participants donning traditional attire and colorful decorations, reflecting the nation’s vibrant spirit.

The 61st anniversary of Algerian Independence holds profound significance for both nations. It marks a milestone in Algeria’s history, symbolizing the triumph of determination, courage, and unity in the face of adversity. For Cuba, it serves as a reminder of the historic alliances formed during the Algerian Revolution and the continued commitment to standing by its side in the pursuit of progress and sovereignty.

Algerian-Cuban Cooperation: A Strong Bond Rooted in Anti-Colonial Struggles and Shared Ideals

Algeria and Cuba have long enjoyed a special relationship based on shared struggles, values, and aspirations. This enduring partnership, which spans several decades, encompasses a wide range of collaborations in areas such as trade, culture, energy, and politics. Both nations have been at the forefront of the fight against imperialism and neocolonialism, advocating for a more just and equitable world.

Rooted in the anti-colonial struggles of the 20th century, Algeria and Cuba have supported each other’ sovereignty movements and fought for their independence. Cuba, for instance, provided vital military and logistical assistance to Algeria during its quest for freedom. The solidarity between the two nations has remained unwavering over the years, with Cuba being one of the first countries to recognize Algeria after its independence.

In 1961, Cuba became the sole country in the Western Hemisphere to recognize the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic (GPRA) as Algeria’s legitimate government. Cuban support continued, and in 1962, the Cuban ship Bahia de Nipe delivered weapons and aid to the FLN camp near the Algerian border. This act of solidarity was followed by the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations in October 1962. The arrival of Cuba’s first internationalist medical brigade in Algeria marked the beginning of their solidarity cooperation, with thousands of Cuban professionals subsequently serving the nation. The collaboration between Algeria and Cuba extends across various sectors, including health, energy, construction, education, culture, and sports.

The historic “Dignity Operation” further solidified their bond. In October 1963, a Cuban military contingent arrived in Algeria to support the young Algerian Republic against the Moroccan invasion. This unwavering assistance laid the foundation for the People’s National Army, an enduring symbol of Algeria’s triumphant revolution.

Both Algeria and Cuba have actively participated in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) since its inception in 1961. As dedicated members of this movement, they have collaborated in international forums to champion the interests of the Global South. Their joint efforts have been focused on opposing neocolonialism, imperialism, and any form of domination over developing countries.

Economic ties between Algeria and Cuba have been growing rapidly, bolstered by commitments from high-level authorities in both countries. Following Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez’s visit to Algiers in November, a business forum was held in Havana, resulting in the signing of several cooperation agreements. Trade between the two nations has been flourishing, reflecting the strong and privileged relations shared by Algeria and Cuba.

Forging Bonds: The Remarkable Role of Cuban Ambassador Armando Vergara Bueno in Enhancing Historical and Economic Relations between Algeria and Cuba

The Cuban Ambassador in Algiers, Mr. Armando Vergara Bueno, has been instrumental in promoting historical and economic ties between the two friendly nations. He has consistently praised Algeria’s steadfast support for Cuba against the arbitrary blockade imposed by the United States.

Guided by the revolutionary doctrine deeply rooted in his country, Ambassador Bueno has been actively engaging with Algerian officials, media personnel, and the online public, with the aim of solidifying the long-standing ties between Algeria and Cuba.

Recognizing the historical and brotherly relations that exist between the two nations, Ambassador Bueno regularly holds meetings with senior Algerian officials and media representatives to discuss mechanisms that can further enhance their strong bond. One such recent meeting took place with Ms. Fazia Dahlab, Minister of the Environment and Renewable Energies, to explore prospects for cooperation and to prepare for the upcoming Meeting of Environment Ministers of the countries of the Group of 77 + China.

Demonstrating his commitment to engaging with the Algerian people, Ambassador Bueno attended the Final of the Algerian Football Cup 2023, held between the teams of CR Belouizdad and ASO Chlef. His presence at the event, upon the invitation of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, signifies the importance of sports and cultural exchange in fostering closer relations between nations.

Significant step taken by the Ambassador was overseeing a meeting between the Cuban trade delegation and Algerian companies participating in the 54th Algiers International Fair (FIA). This initiative aimed to foster economic ties and explore opportunities for collaboration between the two nations.

In a demonstration of unwavering support for the defenseless Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, the Cuban Ambassador to Algeria has been actively engaged in advocating for their cause. Recently, the Ambassador bid farewell to the brigade of Cuban teachers who tirelessly educate at the Simón Bolívar Cuehve school located in the refugee camps, where the Sahrawi Foreign Minister Mohamed Sidati and Ambassador AbdelKader Taleb Omar were present. During the event, the Ambassador reiterated Cuba’ steadfast solidarity with the Sahrawi cause, reaffirming their commitment to the people’ struggle for justice and independence.

Continuing their support, the Cuban Ambassador participated in the 4th edition of the Diplomatic Forum of Solidarity with the Saharawi People. The event saw the attendance of representatives from 17 countries, along with the presence of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic’s Foreign Minister, Mohamed Sidati. The Ambassador seized this opportunity to once again express Cuba’s unwavering solidarity with the Sahrawi people and their undeniable rights. By actively engaging in such forums and advocating for the cause, the Cuban Ambassador aims to contribute to the global recognition of the Sahrawi people’s plight and their aspirations for self-determination.

However, Ambassador Bueno’s efforts extend beyond traditional diplomatic engagements. Recognizing the power of digital platforms in connecting people and sharing cultures, he has embraced social media and online communication channels. Through his personal accounts on Facebook and Twitter, alongside the official embassy accounts, Ambassador Bueno shares daily news about Cuba and the activities of the Cuban diplomatic mission in Algeria. This approach allows him to bridge understanding and forge relationships with diverse audiences, leveraging publications such as newspaper articles, policy papers, and reports to cut through the online clutter.

Furthermore, by providing information in multiple languages such as Spanish, Arabic, English, and French, the Ambassador ensures that language is no longer a barrier to mutual understanding between the Algerian and Cuban peoples.

The quality of political relations between Algeria and Cuba, coupled with their shared values, cultural dimensions, and historic narratives, lay the foundation for a new phase of close bilateral cooperation across various sectors. Ambassador Bueno’s dynamic and comprehensive approach to diplomacy illustrates the mutual political will of both nations to further strengthen their relations.
