Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs Summons U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Over Interventionist Behavior

ALGIERS- In a notable diplomatic move, the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned, on March 18, 2024, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Benjamin Ziff to express a resolute rejection of the interventionist conduct and defamatory remarks originating from the U.S. government and its embassy in Cuba regarding the nation’s internal affairs.
According to a statement issued by the Cuban Foreign Ministry, Deputy Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío delivered a formal protest note to Ziff, reminding him of the expected standards of propriety and integrity for diplomatic missions, as stipulated in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
US direct responsibility
The Cuban authorities highlighted during the meeting the direct responsibility of the U.S. government for the daunting economic challenges currently confronting Cuba. They underscored the adverse effects of the economic blockade imposed by the United States, contending that it has resulted in scarcities and hardships for the Cuban populace, impacting the availability of essential goods and services.
Furthermore, the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the U.S. government’s steadfast efforts to impede Cuba’s endeavors to address its economic and social imperatives. They censured the destabilizing strategy orchestrated by the United States, including economic measures aimed at fomenting discontent among the Cuban populace.
The Cuban government accused the United States of allocating substantial resources to support this strategy, including funding for digital networks and media outlets intended to sway public opinion. They also highlighted the involvement of individuals in South Florida, whom they characterized as mercenaries, in perpetrating aggression against Cuba.
In conclusion, the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs called upon the U.S. government to demonstrate genuine concern for the welfare of the Cuban population by taking measures to alleviate economic hardships. They urged the removal of Cuba from the list of states allegedly sponsoring terrorism, cessation of the persecution of fuel supplies, and cessation of intimidation directed at individuals seeking to engage with the Cuban populace.
The statement from the Cuban Foreign Ministry underscored the need for the United States to prioritize the well-being of the Cuban population, emphasizing that if the U.S. government had even a modicum of genuine concern, it would refrain from including Cuba on its arbitrary list of supposed terrorism-sponsoring states. This designation, renewed by Washington in 2021, impedes Cuba’s commercial transactions and investments, further exacerbating its economic challenges.
For sixty years, Cuba has been subjected to arbitrary sanctions imposed by the United States, significantly impeding the nation’s progress and thwarting its ability to flourish internationally.
Since the early 1960s, the U.S. has enforced a tyrannical economic embargo against Cuba, resulting in profound ramifications for the Cuban economy and its citizens. This embargo imposes restrictions on trade, investment, and financial transactions, severely limiting Cuba’s access to essential resources and modern technologies.
These tyrannous and imperial measures have adversely affected various sectors of the Cuban economy, including agriculture, healthcare, and infrastructure. Additionally, they have deprived Cuban citizens of crucial resources necessary for their well-being. Despite Cuba’s advancements in healthcare and education, the embargo has hindered the country’s developmental trajectory.
