ALGIERS – In the wake of a series of devastating wildfires that ravaged 16 provinces, Algeria finds itself in mourning. Lives have been lost, homes destroyed, and landscapes transformed, but amidst the tragedy, the nation has demonstrated unwavering unity and resilience. Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla expressed solidarity and heartfelt condolences, recognizing the immense impact the fires have had on the Algerian people and their government.

Minister Rodríguez Parrilla’s compassionate words not only acknowledged the immediate pain Algeria is facing but also showcased the strength of bonds between nations when faced with crises. His expression of solidarity reflects the belief that collective support and empathy can play a pivotal role in healing and rebuilding nations in distress.

The response from Cuba resonated deeply with the Algerian people, offering them a glimmer of hope amid the devastation. This international support has not only lifted the spirits of those directly affected but has also strengthened Algeria’s resolve to overcome this calamity and emerge even stronger.

The fires swept through vast forest areas, jungles, and agricultural crops, leaving behind a trail of destruction. The provinces of Bejaia, Bouira, and Jijel were the hardest hit, with almost a hundred fires breaking out and causing the loss of 34 lives, injuring dozens, and necessitating the evacuation of 1,500 citizens.

In response to this catastrophe, the nation rallied together, mobilizing significant material and human resources to confront the raging infernos head-on. A force of 8,000 aid workers, backed by 529 trucks and aerial firefighting means, worked tirelessly to bring the fires under control. Their dedication and bravery in the face of danger have been nothing short of heroic.

The Algerian government’s efficient crisis response was evident, with the Minister of the Interior, Local Assemblies, and Urban Planning, Mr. Brahim Merad, personally supervising firefighting operations in Bejaia. This hands-on approach demonstrated the government’s commitment to managing the crisis effectively.

The Ministry of National Solidarity, Family, and Women’s Issues played a crucial role by setting up a crisis cell in coordination with local authorities to provide care and support to affected families. This step ensured that those most vulnerable received the assistance they needed during this challenging time.

To prevent further incidents, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development appealed to citizens to exercise caution and avoid entering forests during the unusual climatic conditions. The government also initiated awareness campaigns about the dangers of forest fires and urged citizens to report any fire-related incidents promptly.

The Ministry of Health acted swiftly to treat the wounded and provide medical support on-site, establishing a dedicated follow-up cell to ensure that all affected individuals received adequate care. Thanks to these measures, no shortages of medical supplies or equipment were reported.

The nation is united in mourning the loss of 34 brave citizens, including ten soldiers from the People’s National Army, who lost their lives while battling the wildfires. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, assuring them of the state’s unwavering solidarity during these trying times.

Leaders from various sectors of the government, including Lieutenant General, Mr. Saïd Chanegriha, and the Speaker of the People’s National Assembly, Mr. Saleh Goudjil, have also extended their sincere condolences to the families of the martyred soldiers and all the victims.

As the nation stands united, determined to heal, rebuild, and emerge stronger than ever before, our thoughts and prayers are with the Algerian people. Together, may we find solace, support one another, and work hand in hand to overcome the challenges that lie ahead.
