Algeria, March 5, 2024 – The water levels in the country’s reservoirs have seen further improvement over the weekend thanks to rains across different regions of the country. According to a statement made yesterday to Radio Sétif by Ali Boutata, the Director of Control, Maintenance, and Operation at the National Agency for Dams and Transfers (ANBT), the national reservoir filling rate has reached 40.85% following the recent rainfall, up from nearly 37% two weeks ago.

Boutata highlighted that the eastern regions of the country received the majority of the recent precipitation, with the reservoir filling rate in these areas reaching 66.04%. He noted that “8 reservoirs in the eastern part of the country are filled to 100%, including the Beni Haroun and Tabellout reservoirs.” By comparison, only 4 eastern reservoirs reached full capacity last year.

In other regions, the filling rate stands at 27% for central reservoirs and 19% for those in the west. With snowmelt and further weather disturbances expected, the situation may evolve even more by the end of spring.

“We’re in a better situation than last year at the same time,” said Malek Abdeslam, a researcher, lecturer, and director of the water laboratory at the University of Tizi Ouzou. He pointed out that the commissioning of the Corso desalination plant in October 2023, with a capacity of 80,000 m3/day, has contributed to the improved situation. However, he urged caution, recalling that March and April of last year were dry, with May bringing much-needed rainfall. He emphasized the importance of not being overly optimistic, given past experiences.

Abdeslam expressed concern about the rapid runoff of water into the sea, particularly along the coastal areas. He suggested that measures should be taken to slow down this drainage to maximize water retention and groundwater recharge. Highlighting instances of significant water discharge into the sea, he proposed strategies to capture and utilize excess water for groundwater replenishment, particularly in regions like Mitidja.

In conclusion, while celebrating the current favorable water levels, Abdeslam emphasized the need for strategic water management to ensure sustainable use and conservation of water resources across Algeria.
