ALGIERS- The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has released the latest global date production figures. Indeed, according to the FAO’s ranking, Algeria is the fourth largest date-producing country in the world.
With a production estimated at 1.188 million tons in 2021 according to a recently published FAO report, Algeria is ranked 4th among world producers of dates, behind Egypt which produced 1.747 million tons, Saudi Arabia with 1.565 million tons and Iran with 1.303 million tons.
Egypt, the world’s leading producer of dates, has 16 million date palms and intends to plant many more in order to create job opportunities and increase the volume of exports for the sake of the country’s economic and social development.
It should be noted that this global ranking does not take into account the quality aspect of dates. An area where Algerian dates reign supreme thanks to the variants of Deglet Nour. It has crossed our borders and is among the most prized fruits abroad.
