Algiers- Algeria, May 5, 2024 – During his speech at the opening of an intellectual seminar organized at the Cultural Center of Djamaâ El-Djazaïr to commemorate World Press Freedom Day, Cheikh Mohamed Maâmoun Al Kacimi Al Hassani, the Dean of Djamaâ El-Djazaïr, emphasized the urgent need to address ethical imbalances in the media field and confront the prevalent media misrepresentation, particularly concerning the Palestinian cause.

Under the theme “Ethical Imbalances in the Media Field and Means of Prevention,” Sheikh Mohamed Maâmoun Al Kacimi Al Hassani stressed the importance of preventing various ethical imbalances and challenging the double standards and misrepresentation perpetuated by Western media.

He praised the significant and noble role played by media professionals in Algeria, including journalists, technicians, and sector leaders across different media platforms. He highlighted the media’s vital role in shaping public opinion, providing enlightenment, countering misleading narratives, and revealing the truth.

Dean Al Kacimi, who also oversaw the official launch of Djamaâ El-Djazaïr’s website www.eldjamaa.dz, pointed out that the ethical imbalances observed globally, not only in Algeria, are largely due to disparities in values and standards.

He emphasized the paradox where countries advocating freedom, democracy, and human rights are involved in aggressive actions, such as the ongoing war against the people of Gaza in Palestine. This genocidal war is often accompanied by attempts to distort the truth through dual media narratives and misleading slogans, contradicting the principles of press freedom and truth dissemination.

Great Mosque of Algiers… anti extremism’s religious and cultural edifice

The Great Mosque of Algiers stands as a beacon of religious and cultural significance, embodying a modernist interpretation of Islamic architecture while serving as a bulwark against extremism.

Situated in the heart of Algiers within the commune of Mohammadia, this mosque holds the distinction of being the largest in Africa and the third largest globally, following the Masdjid Al-Haram of Mecca and Masdjid Al-Nabaoui of Medina.

Architecturally, the mosque blends modernist elements with Andalusian influences, featuring geometric designs and ornate decorations in wood, marble, and alabaster. Its interior showcases six kilometers of Koranic text in Arabic calligraphy, complemented by turquoise prayer mats.

Spanning 27.75 hectares, the mosque’s prayer hall covers over 2 hectares and accommodates up to 120,000 worshipers. The hall, resembling a massive cube measuring approximately 145 meters by 145 meters and standing 22.5 meters tall, incorporates religious elements such as the Qibla wall, the Mihrab, and the Minbar within a modern aesthetic.

A defining feature of the mosque is its minaret, the tallest in the world at 265 meters. Equipped with elevators, the minaret offers panoramic views of Algiers and the Bay of Algiers, resembling a skyscraper in its dimensions. The tower includes public floors housing the Museum of Algerian History, two research centers accessible to scholars, and a public viewing platform at its summit.

The mosque complex includes cultural and educational facilities, such as a Quranic house, an Islamic cultural center, a library, a museum of Islamic art and history, research centers, and an Imam School. These facilities contribute to the mosque’s role as a center for religious, social, and cultural activities.

Additionally, the mosque features an outdoor plaza, administrative offices, underground parking for 6,000 cars, green spaces, and shops spread across 12 independent buildings. Notably, the mosque is equipped with a highly effective anti-seismic system capable of mitigating more than 70% of earthquake forces.

In essence, the Great Mosque of Algiers serves as a symbol of modern Islam, promoting education, cultural exchange, and social cohesion while standing as a testament to Algeria’s commitment to combating extremism and fostering religious tolerance.
