Algiers- Algeria, May 15, 2024 – Algeria’s active participation in the annual seminar of the Special Committee on Decolonization (C 24) in Caracas, Venezuela, from May 14th to 16th, 2024, underscores its unwavering commitment to defending the right to self-determination.

Led by Ambassador Amar Bendjama, the Algerian delegation joins representatives from the seventeen territories on the UN decolonization agenda, including Western Sahara, as well as UN member states and experts in decolonization. Together, they advocate strongly for the rights of all peoples under colonial domination, emphasizing their right to independence and the imperative to complete the UN decolonization process.

During the seminar’s inaugural session, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez of Venezuela highlighted her country’s deep-rooted commitment to the anti-colonial struggle. She affirmed Venezuela’s steadfast support for the Sahrawi people’s fight for self-determination, emphasizing that the struggle against colonialism will persist until all forms of colonial oppression are eradicated. The Committee of 24, entrusted with implementing Resolution 1514 adopted in 1960, remains a cornerstone of the UN’s decolonization doctrine.

The issue of Western Sahara will be a focal point of discussion during the seminar, beginning on the second day. Many countries, united in their defense of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence, will come together to advocate for justice and uphold international legality. This seminar serves as a platform to reaffirm the global commitment to decolonization and to advance the cause of peoples striving for freedom and independence.
