Algiers, Algeria | May 21, 2024 —  Algeria’s Minister of Water Resources, Taha Derbal, has exposed the deliberate and systematic drying of dams and water sources along Algeria’s western borders by Morocco. These actions, which Derbal described as blatant violations of global human, animal, and plant rights to water, have prompted Algeria to raise global awareness to develop a robust plan to address this issue.

Speaking at the World Water Forum in Bali, Indonesia, on Monday, Derbal highlighted the detrimental environmental impact of these practices, which have disrupted the ecological balance, affecting animals, plants, and humans. “We have observed practices from neighboring countries that have disrupted the environmental equilibrium, causing significant harm due to the deliberate and systematic drying of certain dams and areas,” he said.

Derbal noted that Algeria has mobilized substantial resources to combat water scarcity and ensure water availability for all its citizens. He pointed out that water issues, exacerbated by climate change, are increasingly being raised on the international stage. In response, Algeria has adopted a multi-faceted plan focusing on unconventional water resources. This includes significant advancements in seawater desalination, supported by substantial investments and numerous projects initiated under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directives, aiming to combat water shortages and guarantee a stable water supply for the populace.

A crucial component of Algeria’s strategy is the reuse of treated wastewater for agricultural purposes, a sector consuming over 70% of the annually collected water. Derbal explained that this approach helps conserve water resources for domestic use, thereby preserving the country’s reserves for future generations.

The minister also emphasized the importance of protecting ecosystems and maintaining ecological balance, concerns echoed by participants at the World Water Forum in Bali. He clarified that “irresponsible actions by a neighboring country” have disrupted the environmental balance, significantly affecting the animal and plant wealth along Algeria’s western borders. Derbal called for strong opposition to such practices.

In conclusion, Algeria’s proactive measures in water management and its call for international attention to environmental violations underscore its commitment to sustainable development and ecological preservation.
