Desperate and Cornered: Morocco’s Regime in Panic Over Trump’s Return and Western Sahara Gamble

Algiers, Algeria | February 13th, 2025 — As the Moroccan regime finds itself in a whirlwind of uncertainty, the return of Donald Trump to the White House has sent shockwaves through the corridors of the royal palace in Rabat. Once jubilant at the prospect of Trump’s reelection, hoping for a continuation of his 2020 stance on Western Sahara, the regime now faces an unexpected and far more ominous reality. Instead of reaffirming Morocco’s baseless claims over Western Sahara, Trump has reportedly placed a chilling demand on Rabat’s table—turning Moroccan soil into a relocation hub for forcibly displaced Palestinians from Gaza.

Multiple sources, including Zionist and Western media outlets, have confirmed that Washington has pressured Morocco into accepting this nightmarish proposal, a move that has left the monarchy scrambling for damage control. Instead of leveraging Trump’s return to cement its illegal occupation of Western Sahara, the Alawite regime is now consumed with minimizing its losses, forced to weigh the catastrophic consequences of further entrenching itself in the U.S.-Zionist agenda.

Trump’s Price: Betrayal at a Higher Cost

In 2020, Morocco hastily rushed into normalizing ties with the Zionist entity, seduced by a quid pro quo arrangement orchestrated by the Trump administration, which saw the U.S. recognizing its illegitimate claims over Western Sahara. But now, as Trump reasserts his grip on power, the palace in Rabat has realized the true cost of this Faustian bargain. The stakes have skyrocketed, and what was once a convenient diplomatic maneuver has transformed into a geopolitical quagmire.

Renowned Spanish journalist Ignacio Cembrero, writing for El Confidencial, reveals that Morocco is no longer as eager to demand Trump’s reaffirmation of its so-called sovereignty over Western Sahara. The reason is clear—the looming price is too steep. Trump’s notorious transactional diplomacy has pushed Morocco into a perilous corner: accept the resettlement of Palestinians on its territory or risk Washington’s wrath and the unraveling of its fragile diplomatic cover on Western Sahara.

The Moroccan monarchy, despite its deep entanglement with the Zionist regime, remains paralyzed. While countries across the Arab world swiftly condemned the forced displacement of Gazans, Morocco remained conspicuously silent for nearly a week—an awkward, telling delay that underscored its internal chaos. Even when it finally broke its silence, it did so timidly, in a joint statement with Iraq—an embarrassing contrast to the resolute and immediate stances taken by Algeria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Jordan.

A Panicked Search for Alternatives

With Trump’s demands threatening to upend its already fragile position, Morocco is now desperately exploring alternative diplomatic maneuvers. One such attempt, as reported by Cembrero, is a planned international conference in April in the UAE, where Morocco hopes to rally European nations, including France, to endorse its territorial ambitions in Western Sahara. However, this scheme has already encountered major obstacles, with key European players, including the UK and Italy, showing little enthusiasm for legitimizing Rabat’s illegal occupation.

Hugh Lovatt, a senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, has pointed out that Morocco is aggressively pressuring European countries to abandon their legal stance on Western Sahara. However, this effort is failing to gain the traction Rabat had anticipated, leaving the regime further isolated.

Meanwhile, Spain’s left-leaning government, led by Pedro Sánchez, remains under scrutiny for its ambiguous position, with many questioning whether Madrid will bend to Rabat’s influence or uphold international law. The real enigma, however, remains the United States. With Trump laser-focused on advancing his grotesque vision of Palestinian ethnic cleansing, Morocco’s hesitant rejection of his plan—delayed and half-hearted as it was—could provoke repercussions from a White House that does not tolerate defiance.

A Regime on the Brink

As the weeks unfold, the Moroccan monarchy finds itself in an increasingly precarious situation. Having sold its sovereignty to Zionist interests in exchange for short-lived diplomatic gains, Rabat now realizes that its servility has only emboldened its foreign backers to impose even more ruthless demands. The gamble it played in 2020 has turned against it, and the price of submission has escalated beyond what the regime can afford.

For the Moroccan people, this latest debacle only reinforces what has long been evident: their country’s leadership has shackled them to a doomed trajectory, entrenching itself in reckless alliances that prioritize Zionist and American interests over Morocco’s stability, security, and dignity. With Trump back in power, the nightmare of being used as a pawn in his imperialist agenda is no longer theoretical—it is an imminent and chilling reality.
