ALGIERS- Despite adverse weather conditions, scores of Moroccan youth have taken to the sea in an attempt to migrate irregularly by swimming towards the occupied city of Ceuta.
Recent videos circulating on Facebook pages in the region depict the increased activity of youth, both male and female, of various ages, attempting to realize their dream of migration to Europe through the gateway of Ceuta, a Spanish enclave adjacent to Moroccan coasts.
Local media outlets in the occupied city reported that more than 40 migrants, most of them Moroccans, successfully swam towards the city on Tuesday morning, braving heavy rain, strong winds, and rough waves. They managed to overcome the wave breaker in Benzu, despite the inclement weather conditions.
Among those who reached the city were minors under the age of 18, along with adults who risked their lives amid the storm and turbulent weather conditions prevailing in Ceuta.
The same source confirmed an increase in attempted migrations by swimming in recent times, which has resulted in fatalities in the past weekends. Those who managed to cross have suffered bruises and injuries after colliding with rocks due to the force of the waves.
The North Observatory for Human Rights had warned two weeks ago about the rising attempts of unaccompanied minors to migrate to the beaches of occupied Ceuta, despite the long distance, cold and strong sea currents, and the increased risks posed by the presence of rocks, putting the lives of migrants in danger.
The Observatory emphasized that irregular migration of Moroccan youth, including minors, has been on the rise due to the ongoing deterioration of economic and social conditions, loss of hope, and the near absence of social institutions, particularly schools.
