ALGIERS– It has become increasingly clear that Tel-Aviv has no intention of supporting the colonization of Western Sahara, despite Morocco’ successive concessions. This sentiment has been echoed by Professor Yahia Zoubir in an interview with La Patrie News and was further reinforced during Zionist Transport Minister Miri Regev’s recent visit to Morocco.
While the focus of Regev’s visit was on maritime cooperation between the two countries, she deftly sidestepped a question about Western Sahara during a press conference. This is not surprising, as Tel-Aviv is primarily concerned with its own interests and views Morocco as a means to gain a foothold in Africa. Once it no longer serves this purpose, Morocco can be discarded like a worn-out sock.
It is clear that Tel-Aviv’s cooperation with Rabat in terms of transport is aimed at providing better access to the western Mediterranean and the Atlantic via the Strait of Gibraltar. While tourism is also important, particularly for the approximately 700,000 “Israelis” of Moroccan descent who maintain strong ties with their country of origin, it is not the primary focus of this partnership.
The Minister of Likud, Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing party, is set to visit Larache, her father’s hometown in the north, for the first time. Additionally, Amir Ohana, the Speaker of the Knesset, the Zionist Parliament, and also of Moroccan origin, has been invited to Rabat in early June by Moroccan parliamentarians, as reported by Israeli media.
Since the normalization of relations between the two parties in December 2020, within the framework of the Abraham Accords, a process between the Jewish State and several Arab countries backed by Washington, cooperation in areas such as security, trade, and tourism has continued at a steady pace.
