Direct Sales Initiative Launches to Empower Local Apple Producers, Enhance Market Access

Algiers, Algeria | October 12th, 2024 — In a landmark move to bolster local agriculture and support producers, the Ministry of Trade and Export Promotion has inaugurated a direct sales initiative at the wholesale market in Attatba. This initiative aims to facilitate the sale of apples directly from farmers to retailers, significantly enhancing market access for local producers while bypassing intermediaries. The event witnessed the participation of farmers and producers from several regions, including Blida, Médéa, Ain Defla, Tizi Ouzou, Batna, and Sidi Bel Abbès.

The decision to open commercial spaces free of charge for apple producers at the Ministry’s wholesale markets comes as a strategic response to the growing need to dismantle the existing network of intermediaries that has historically burdened both producers and consumers. By providing a platform where farmers can connect directly with retailers, the initiative seeks to improve the farmers’ profit margins and ensure that consumers can access fresh produce at more reasonable prices.
