Algiers, Algeria | May 17, 2024 — The Ministry of Energy and Mines disclosed on Friday that Mr. Mohamed Arkab, the Minister of Energy and Mines, engaged in discussions with Mr. Nicola Monti, the CEO of the Italian company “Edison,” during a meeting held in Italy. This encounter was announced through a statement issued by the ministry.

The discussions took place on the sidelines of the international forum “Towards the South: The European Strategy for a New Geopolitical, Economic, and Socio-cultural Era in the Mediterranean Region,” convened in the Italian city of Sorrento. The statement outlined that the focal point of the meeting was an assessment of the existing cooperation and partnership between Sonatrach and Edison groups, along with deliberations on potential future collaborations and investments in strategic energy projects within Algeria.

The statement elaborated that the deliberations encompassed several key areas, including the export of natural gas to Italy and the exploration of opportunities for electrical interconnection between Algeria and Italy. Particularly noteworthy was the consideration of Algeria’s substantial capacities in renewable energies and the exploration of the possibility of hydrogen transportation from Algeria to Italy.

Both parties acknowledged the foundation of trust and strong relations characterizing the ties between Sonatrach, Edison, and other Italian energy entities. Additionally, they addressed various cooperation aspects within the framework of the Mattei Plan, aimed at bolstering collaboration with African nations. This plan involves supporting these countries in the development of their natural resources, especially in energy and infrastructure sectors, and diversifying supply chains to ensure energy security while fostering sustainable economic development across multiple domains such as agriculture, health, water, education, research, and development.

Furthermore, Minister Arkab and Mr. Monti delved into other collaboration facets, including training initiatives, knowledge exchange programs, and technology transfer endeavors. These discussions underscored the commitment of both entities to strengthening bilateral cooperation and fostering mutual growth and development in the energy sector and beyond.
