Algiers, Algeria | October 1st, 2024 — On Monday, Health Minister Abdelhak Saihi, alongside Colonel Boualem Boughelaf, Director General of Civil Protection, oversaw the departure of a joint medical mission from the Boufarik military airbase in Blida. This initiative aims to provide critical medical support to the wilayas of Bordj Badji Mokhtar and In Guezzam, particularly in response to recent cases of diphtheria and malaria.
Minister Saihi announced that the cargo, which includes essential medicines and medical supplies for In Guezzam, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, and Tamanrasset, is intended to bolster the capabilities of local medical teams. This effort aligns with directives from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, emphasizing a proactive approach to public health management.
The joint medical caravan, a collaborative initiative between the Ministry of Health and the General Directorate of Civil Protection (DGPC), is designed to enhance patient care and respond comprehensively to the epidemiological challenges in the targeted regions. Saihi noted that anti-malaria medications shipped on Sunday successfully arrived in Timiaouine and Tin Zaouatine on Monday morning, with additional supplies expected soon.
Reassuring the public about the current health situation, Minister Saihi stated that “the situation is stable,” with no new infections reported in the past week in the affected southern wilayas. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to ensuring comprehensive patient care through the provision of necessary medications and medical equipment, highlighting that the joint caravan would further enhance local medical expertise.
Colonel Farouk Achour, an inspector at the DGPC, confirmed that the deployment of this medical mission adheres to the President’s directives aimed at effectively managing health challenges in the region. The mission, comprising 60 medical professionals, including doctors and nurses, is equipped with medicines, vaccines, medical equipment, and 11 ambulances, ensuring robust support for local healthcare teams.
