Sheikh Mohamed Maâmoun Al Kacimi Al Hassani: Zawiyas Continue Their Mission Against Cultural and Religious Alienation

Algiers, Algeria | October 13th, 2024 —  Participants at the first national conference titled “The Educational and Instructional Mission of Scientific Zawiyas: The Qasimi Zawiya in El-Hamel (M’sila) as a Model,” which commenced on Sunday in Bordj Bou Arréridj, emphasized the pivotal role of this religious institution in preserving national identity and religious reference.

Sheikh Mohamed Maâmoun Al Kacimi Al Hassani, Dean of Djamaâ El-Djazaïr and President of the Rahmaniyya League of Scientific Zawiyas, highlighted in his address that “the authentic zawiyas fulfilled their mission and served as impenetrable fortresses for Islam against French colonialism. They were among the bastions that safeguarded national identity during Algeria’s darkest period of colonization and fought against the colonial project of cultural and religious alienation.”

He stated that just as the zawiyas played their role during the glorious Liberation War, they continue today to combat cultural and religious alienation. He underscored the necessity for these institutions to maintain their comprehensive mission to preserve Algeria’s religious reference, characterized by moderation and the rich cultural tapestry of Algerian society.

Dr. Ahmed Abu Anas Bousba, the conference president and Director of the Qasimi Tahir Zawiya in Bordj Bou Arréridj, focused in his speech on defining the role, principles, and values of the zawiya, as well as the marginalization and distortion that its scholars have faced throughout history. He highlighted the educational role the zawiya played in countering ideas that are “alien to our society and religion.”

Professor Bouazza Boudarsaïa, Director of Mohamed El-Bachir El-Ibrahimi University, described the conference as an opportunity to showcase the contributions of the zawiya in education and its historical struggle against French colonialism, as well as its role in preserving Algeria’s identity and religious reference, starting from the resistance of Emir Abdelkader to the glorious Liberation Revolution.

This conference, organized by the Rahmaniyya League of Scientific Zawiyas and the Qasimi Zawiya in Bordj Bou Arréridj in collaboration with Mohamed El-Bachir El-Ibrahimi University, under the honorary presidency of Sheikh Mohamed Maâmoun Al Kacimi Al Hassani, features a distinguished array of researchers and scholars from various national universities.
