ALGIERS- The Qatari company Baladna, specialized in dairy production and a leader in the field in Qatar with significant international presence, has confirmed the official signing of a partnership agreement for the launch of a mega-project farm for milk powder production in Adrar, reports the news website Doha News, citing a close source to the matter.
The agreement entails the establishment of a modern mega-farm in the southern part of the country, spanning over an area of no less than 100,000 hectares. This farm is set to have a production capacity of over 200,000 tons of milk powder annually, as confirmed by the same source.
Last Saturday, during an interview with national media representatives, the President of the Republic, as a reminder, announced that Algeria was preparing to sign an important agreement with “a highly respected Arab partner, to implement a large-scale farm project spanning 100,000 hectares in Adrar” to begin, as he said, “for the first time”, local production of milk powder. “It is not inevitable for us to continue importing milk powder, and if we lack any technical know-how to do so, we can rely on recognized partners,” emphasized the head of state.
$600 Million Annually
As a net importer of milk powder, Algeria spends an average of around $600 million annually to meet local demand, estimated at about 175,000 tons annually, according to official estimates. Once operational, the future mega-farm in Adrar is expected to strengthen Algeria’s food sovereignty and ensure self-sufficiency in this essential product, particularly leveraging the renowned expertise of the Qatari giant Baladna in dairy production and farming.
Baladna Group, it is worth noting, is considered a leader in this field not only in the Qatari market but also in the Gulf region and other Asian markets. Listed on the Qatar Stock Exchange since 2019, Baladna has significantly expanded its international activities in recent years, especially since the diplomatic crisis between Qatar and its Gulf neighbors erupted in 2017. The group operates one of the largest dairy farms in the region, located north of Doha, covering an area of 2.4 million square meters, with a capacity of 24,000 dairy cows.
The group, as stated on its official website, has multiple production lines for fresh milk, yogurt, cheese, sour cream, desserts, juices, meat, and organic fertilizers, with farms designed to minimize water and energy waste through state-of-the-art production processes.
Operating in several countries such as Egypt, Oman, Malaysia, and others, Baladna is regarded as a diversified agricultural enterprise under the Qatari Power International Holding group, which is involved in several major investment projects in Algeria, including the construction of the Algerian-Qatari-German hospital.
